Howard Burnham Historic Interpreter, Independent Scholar |
With a repertoire of nearly 50 characters, Howard Burnham is an extremely versatile and creative historic interpreter. Focusing mostly on artistic figures and 18th and 19th century military figures, with of course some exceptions, Burnham also employs his background as an actor, educator and museum director to bring authentic portrayals of history to life. C.S. Lewis, Lord Halifax, Lord Cornwallis and the ill-fated Captain Smith of the Titanic are just a few of his characters. Burnham offers a unique British perspective on American history, making him a dynamic performer and speaker. With a subtle British wit and calm demeanor, Burnham has been performing at libraries, schools, churches, national parks and conventions in the U.S. for the last eight years. His book, The Grones Dictionary of Music, or Misleading Lives of the Great Composers, illustrates Burnham’s command of musical expertise with humor and historical accuracy. Currently making his home in Columbia, SC, Burnham stays busy touring the east coast performing his numerous portrayals of historic figures, and occasionally travels across the pond to his native England. He serves as the Sir Evelyn Wrench Lecturer for the English Speaking Union, and is a member of the South Carolina Arts Commission’s Approved Artist Roster – a testament to his commitment to historical accuracy and professional ability. In 1973, after graduating with honors in Modern History from the University of Durham, Burnham was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, London. With his extensive repertoire of portrayals and programs, Burnham is a versatile performer who offers unique insight on military and artistic figures of great significance to today’s world.
