Edward Haile
About Edward Haile :
Edward W. Haile, or Ed, as he is known to friends, describes himself as a publisher and a mapmaker. But he is so much more than that. Best known for his book, Jamestown Narratives, Ed drinks in history and regurgitates it with the finesse of a Maestro both in prose and poetry.
His representations of Virginia history is legendary among historical scholars, who refer to the Jamestown Narratives as the Bible of our nation’s history. He has become the talking head for the National Geographic Society’s TV documentaries on John Smith’s voyages.
An historic scholar, a mapmaker, an author to be reckoned with, no doubt about it…. but Ed’s passion is his poetry. His most recently published book, Where None Before Hath Stood, makes him, in our humble opinion, the poet laureate of Jamestown’s 400th Anniversary, the subject of the poem. If ever there was a question, the book is a demonstration of his love of poetry and prose. It has been said that if Jamestown Narratives is a real book, then Where None Before Hath Stood is a true poem about Jamestown.
Listening to Ed recite his poems is a joyful experience. The audience becomes more than a listener. They are involved, engaged, and inspired… and one could venture to say, changed by the experience. “I tell people, ‘If you don’t get it, raise your hand.’” One can clearly see why Ed considers himself a poet first and an historian second.
