Mark Greenough

Historic Interpreter

Nearly 30 years of scholarship and performance define Mark Greenough’s career as an historic interpreter. Greenough portrays specific figures from different periods in our history to tell their stories, and the stories of our nation, from a first-person perspective. Holding fast to the belief that, “History is both the means and the material for understanding others and for defining ourselves,” Greenough routinely delivers compelling, enlightening performances to audiences ranging from elementary school students to investment groups to bar associations across the US.

Greenough’s goal is to “prevent ‘cultural amnesia’ by making our past accessible and interesting to a broader public audience.” A true believer in the power of history, he has thrown himself into discovery of the past and, by extension, discovery of himself and those around him.

Numerous credits in scholarly publications and several parts in feature films attest to Greenough’s credibility and reputation within the universe of historical scholarship. While this work is a source of pride for Mark, his passion is bringing these lessons to an audience that would not otherwise be exposed to the remarkable stories found in what Greenough calls the finest book ever written – History.

With a wide range of portrayals the first two centuries of American history, Greenough is a true professional when it comes to historic interpretation. From Jamestown to the Civil War and beyond, Greenough’s “conversations” with audiences excite, enlighten and inspire.
